Who is responsible

If you choose to vote

Political opinions can be special-category personal data under UK GDPR. Removing names alone does not make a political dataset anonymous. We therefore minimise the information processed and ask for explicit consent before submitting a choice. You can read everything without giving it.

The voting request briefly contains a question identifier and your choice (For, Against or Unsure). The hosting service necessarily handles your network address to deliver the request. The application immediately adds the choice to a counter. It does not store an individual ballot or associate the choice with a person, IP hash, browser token or timestamp.

• In the database: a debate identifier and three aggregate counts. No names, email addresses, raw IP addresses, browser tokens, individual choices, vote timestamps or user-agent strings. Totals are retained while the debate is published.
• In your browser: a local record, one per debate, that you started or completed a vote on that question, plus a result receipt that lets you see that debate’s totals again. These are stored in localStorage until you clear them and are strictly necessary to stop a repeat vote and re-show results. Your selected answer is not saved locally. We set no other browser identifier.
• For abuse prevention: a secret-salted, truncated IP hash and a request counter, held separately in an edge cache for a maximum of 60 seconds, well below 24 hours. The salt input rotates daily. These records contain no debate, choice or browser token. They never enter the voting database or its backups.

The result receipt is the same for everyone who votes on the same question. It is not a unique visitor identifier. Our application has no request-body logging, advertising identifiers, fingerprints or cross-site tracking.

Our lawful bases

• Casting a vote: your explicit consent, given by ticking the consent box at the point of voting (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(a) and, because a political opinion is special-category data, Article 9(2)(a)). Voting is optional; everything can be read without it.
• Rate-limit IP hash: our legitimate interests in preventing automated or abusive vote submissions (Article 6(1)(f)). The hash is made with a secret salt that rotates daily, contains no debate or choice, is used only for rate limiting and is held in the edge cache for no more than 60 seconds. We have recorded a legitimate interests assessment.
• Emails you send us: our legitimate interests in answering corrections and privacy requests (Article 6(1)(f)).

The limits of anonymity and voting

We aim to keep published totals anonymous. Your IP address and submitted view are still processed transiently during delivery.

Browser storage discourages a second vote from the same browser. It cannot establish a unique person. Clearing storage, switching devices or deliberately bypassing the interface can permit repeat votes. The IP-hash rate limit is a best-effort per-location control; shared connections may be limited together and concurrent or geographically distributed requests can evade it.

Results are available after voting. They are self-selected, unaudited reader responses, not a scientific poll, and should never be treated as representative of UK public opinion. A shared result receipt may also let another person view totals.

If the connection fails after submitting, we cannot always tell you whether the increment succeeded. The browser records that uncertainty and does not automatically submit again. This avoids silently counting a retry as another vote.

Withdrawing consent and clearing this device

You can decline or withdraw before submission by leaving the form. Once a choice has been added to an anonymous total, we cannot locate and remove that individual contribution: there is no stored ballot linking it to you. Clearing localStorage removes this device’s participation records and receipts; it does not subtract from totals.

Use your browser’s site-data controls or the button below to delete only Forum Politicum voting records. On a shared device, another user could otherwise see which debates were completed, though not your answers.

Hosting, analytics and external links

Cloudflare provides hosting and processes connection data to operate and protect its network. The application does not retain raw connection identifiers. Cloudflare’s own processing is described in its privacy policy. The application’s 60-second cache limit is not a promise about all data processed by the host.

International transfers

Cloudflare, Inc. is based in the United States and runs a global network, so request data may be processed outside the UK. Where personal data is transferred to a country without UK adequacy regulations, we rely on the safeguards Cloudflare offers: the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (or the UK International Data Transfer Agreement) and, where applicable, Cloudflare’s certification under the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

Analytics is off in this build. The only optional analytics integration is Cloudflare Web Analytics. We include no third-party trackers, remote fonts, embedded social posts or advertising pixels. Following a source link takes you to another organisation’s site and its privacy rules.

Corrections and privacy requests

If you email us, the message necessarily contains your address and anything you choose to send. Please avoid sensitive details. Correspondence is separate from voting; it is never attached to vote totals or used for political profiling. We keep correspondence for 12 months after the matter is closed, then delete it, unless a longer period is needed for a legal claim.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection (including to processing based on legitimate interests) and data portability where they apply, and you can withdraw consent at any time without affecting processing already carried out. Contact privacy@forumpoliticum.com to use them. Anonymous totals cannot be retrieved or removed as your personal vote record, because no ballot linked to you is stored.
